Big roars to you all… We had such a lovely few weeks watching the Olympics and the Paralympic games! Did you enjoy all the sports? The Games have inspired us to start our cycling blogs again…
But before we write about the places we have visited… We wanted to talk about something we do to relax when we have just finished a tiring day of cycling….
We LOVE reading!
Dino loves reading picture books that are funny and rhyme…his favourite book is PANTS!
Lion has just started reading chapter books… His favourite author is a man called Roald Dahl!
He has written some amazing books for children…Lion’s favourite is a book called ‘The BFG’ or “the Big Friendly Giant”
Today is ‘Roald Dahl Day’ to celebrate how amazing his books are. Would you like to learn some more…
Roald Dahl was born on the 13th September 1916. Unfortunately he died on the 23rd November 1990. Today would have been 96 years old!
He was born in Wales.
His mum and dad were Norwegian. Roald first went to school in Wales and then boarding school in England. When he was 8 years old, he and some friends put a dead mouse in a jar of gobstoppers at the local sweet shop! A funny but very naughty joke!
When he left school he worked in Kenya and Tanzania ( two countries we really enjoyed cycling through!) and then he joined the Royal Air Force to fly aeroplanes in World War II.
After the war he started writing books for adults. But his books for children were much more popular. His stories are always funny, with strange characters, like the Twits…
And funny words like..
Snozzcumbers…which the BFG eats (they taste of frogs skin and rotten fish…yuk!)

Roald Dahl wrote some of the most famous children’s in the world. He has sold over 100’million books and they have been rewritten in over 50 languages!
His books include: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach as well as a book called ‘revolting rhymes!’
‘Going Solo’ is a book all about his life, written in a funny way. Great if you want to know more about his life in Africa!
His books are so good that some have been made into films..
And some have been made into stamps to go on letters…that only happens if your books are totally amazing to read!
We love Roald Dahl
He also said some funny things when he was alive.
“Do you know what breakfast cereal is made of? It’s made of all those little curly wooden shavings you find in pencil sharpeners!”
― Roald Dahl
“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
Our favourite character is the BFG…we like him because he used to catch dreams, put them in bottles and then deliver them to children so they had nice dreams while they were sleeping.
You can create your own label for a dream bottle by visiting the official ‘Roald Dahl Day’ site at
We are off to sleep and we hope the BFG sends us a nice dream… Lion wants to dream about cars and Dino wants to dream about hhhhhuge chocolate cakes…
